Exclusive! Dot Jobs seeking to expand domain usage for job boards

At SHRM Chicago last week I met an exec from the .jobs domain registry, Brian Johnson. He told me some very interesting news. I interviewed him in the video below. Basically they want to expand the use of the domain by letting niche boards register and use names like sales.jobs or newyork.jobs.

"We look forward to the day when we can remove the restrictions...and help serve the job board community"

-Brian Johnson

This is big news. The ramifications for current job boards could be huge. Perhaps there will be more competition or there could be a gold rush on the best domains. Brian is unsure when or if this will go through but he assured me they are talking with officials at SHRM to make it happen. SHRM oversees the .jobs domain. I asked him how they might let site owners purchase these new domains but he wasn't sure how they would be doled out...auction style perhaps?

my pleasure, there is another good one here: ICANN's New gTLD Process: Hype and Reality

these articles are not about .jobs but rather the possibility of .career, .work, Etc.

interesting quote, when i talked to dot jobs they seemed very excited about opening up the domain, he said they were actively lobbying shrm to get it done...if it ever does get opened up there is going to be a hell of a fight for those domains...most job board owners Ive talked to since this are very concerned about others squatting on their territory,,,

Joe found something interesting written about this by Gerry Crispin:

Here's what Gerry says about it-

"I nearly went off the ranch myself the other day when I saw a video that suggested efforts were underway to open up the (dot).jobs domain beyond corporation names and allow urls like NewYork.jobs or Engineering.jobs. (You can be certain that would set off a new land rush for urls.) The problem is that SHRM was granted "Stewardship" of the domain and is charged with keeping it free of the scams and hype that typify the other domains and make it so difficult to identify the legitimate job boards. Fortunately, I was able to quickly confirm that the claim was groundless and the merely wishful thinking of SHRM's distribution partner.

The consequence of losing faith with "Trusted Partners" however will eventually redefine the recruiting industry. "

SHRM will not let this happen since it goes against the reason why .jobs was created.

Don, I had a similar problem with RetiredBrains.com as a company started using RetiredBrain.com without the (s). I had to have my attorney contact them. I also had to purchase RetiredBrains.net and a number of other domains to make sure my brand was protected.

It will mostly put more tools into the hands of the sort of people who will not be joining this forum. Here's one way I expect those domains will be used heavily.

And every existing job board will be forced to shell out money for domains just to protect their trademarks and interests in established websites. It's basically a tax on us designed to benefit... who?

We have enough chaos with the existing extensions. Just yesterday, I e-mailed a job board owner (no less) to try to stop him from using LatProJobs.com. What's really difficult is when those domains are owned by someone in China. the real tax hits you when you hire a lawyer to enforce your trademark rights.

Unless dot jobs is inially offered to current job board owners, I see this as a big concern.

As an example, we have spent 9 years branding JobsInLogistics.com. Recently someone started a board JobsInLogistics.net. This copy cat board has insignificant traffic. But using false advertisng: JobsInLogistics.net is the most targeted niche job board for logistics and logistic related jobs on the internet. , they managed to fool one of our customers into advertising on this board by accident. The board had no real jobs listed, but by backfilling with hundred of jobs from Indeed, it gave the illusion of grandeur.

I can see bigger problems with dot jobs. I understand that someone has already reserved JobsInLogistics.jobs.

This could create significant confusion in our industry unless the sale of dot jobs is regulated and owners of the current branded names be given first options.
